Project Overview

We need a mobile app developed to upload and store tax documents and to allow clients to electronically sign their completed documents securely. We will distribute this app via our sites in multiple states across the US. Tax preparers located remotely will view documents and use them to complete the returns. The app must comply with IRS requirements for data security.StreetCred provides free tax preparation services integrated into pediatric clinics - a frequented, trusted location - to prescribe better health for families. We know that when families receive cash from tax credits (the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit to be precise), moms and babies are healthier. But we also know that 20% of families don't claim these credits, and 60% who do lose hundreds of dollars to paid, predatory tax preparers. To date, we have returned $5.3 million to 2700 families. We know there are millions of families who could benefit from this service. Our current model is human resource intensive as it relies on a team of in person tax volunteers, usually about 20 per site.

We dream of building this service into a self-sustaining national movement with economies of scale. To that end, this summer we launched the Medical Tax Collaborative, a technical support hub to exponentiate our impact & build this movement nationally. Thirty-eight clinics & hospitals across 23 states have engaged with us to-date. To move from providing technical advice to actual economies of scale, we envision building out a mobile app to allow clinics to upload tax documents for us to prepare in Boston for economies of scale and for clients to electronically sign their returns. This model would decrease the number of staff per site needed from 20 to 1 and ensure our volunteers' time is best spent in high-volume tax preparation. We have done a national review of tools available to see if there are pre-existing tools we can use. Although some commercial apps, like Tax Cady, do exist, we do not have the financial resources to purchase them. We also have participated in conference calls with VITA, the national umbrella under which free tax preparation is governed by the IRS, sites who use some technology to prepare returns remotely. Although we have learned from them, none have tools integrated into one simple app. We have created the Medical Tax Collaborative, which will be a natural platform to roll out the app once it is finished. It has served 38 unique sites across the country to date with technical advice and support.
