Project Overview

The Young Shakespeareans partners with LAUSD Title 1 Elementary and Middle schools in South Central Los Angeles pairing the challenge of Shakespeare with the magic of theatrical production and performance. We engage our students' academic and life skills in an exciting and empowering after-school experience that inspires and confirms our motto, "If I can do Shakespeare, I can do Anything!".

Last Spring, we were the only independent after-school program that maintained engagement with our LAUSD Title 1 students upon COVID-19 school closures, and in preparation for the strong likelihood that all teaching will happen online through the remainder of this academic year (at least), we have developed an extensive Virtual Program specifically designed for online instruction, digital production (sound, scenics, costumes/props), and virtual performance in an integrated real-time theatrical experience.

Metrics are essential to our ability to properly assess our methods and adjust powerfully wherever/whenever necessary, as well as for fundraising. We eagerly seek an experienced guide in this process, particularly someone with background in education through the arts.
We have questionnaires, surveys, video interviews, and letters from various constituencies (students, teachers, school administrators, teaching artists, audience members, donors) - we would like to review these with a critical eye and determine what needs to be changed and/or added.

Nonprofit Overview

To use the challenge of Shakespeare’s works
to create early and formative learning experiences in Title 1 elementary and middle schools, and to promote exposure and high expectations regardless of students’ ethnicity, origin, or income level. Hence our motto: "IF I CAN DO SHAKESPEARE, I CAN DO ANYTHING!"
