We are a new and growing nonprofit and need help creating internal controls. We do not provide direct services to parents but work with vendors and contractors to provide services and internal controls are an important part of our continued success. Internal controls are financial management practices that are systematically used to prevent misuse and misappropriation of assets, such as occur through theft or embezzlement. Internal controls are generally described in written policies that set forth the procedures that the nonprofit will follow, as well as who is responsible. The goal of internal controls is to create business practices that serve as “checks and balances” on staff (and sometimes board members) and/or outside vendors, in order to reduce the risk of misappropriation of funds/assets.

Dyslexia Advocation, Inc. mission is to equip parents of children with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences with the necessary tools to help their children become successful readers. We want to do this work by absorbing the cost for quality advocacy services, specialized tutoring, and neuropsychological evaluations for black parents and underrepresented minorities in and around the Baltimore, MD region. No other organization is helping parents with the financial burden of accessing special education services.

Did you know in Maryland, a dyslexia therapist can cost anywhere from $75 - $123 per session and it is recommended that a child receives at minimum 2 sessions per week? That's between $600 - $985 per month! Parents can not "wait" on school systems to implement dyslexia programs and with Covid-19, children who learn differently are falling further behind. Internal controls will allow us to grow and scale which are needed as we RECRUIT more partners, ATTRACT more donors, REACH more parents, and SHARE our story with audiences all over the globe.
