Project Overview

We are looking for a volunteer who can craft a public relations strategy for Burn Design Lab (BDL) on Vashon Island, just outside of Seattle.

It's a little-known gem in the area that does design, innovation, research, and lab testing for cookstoves for populations in low-income countries, specifically Ghana, Haiti, Madagascar, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Sierra Leone to name a few. Reputation for the award-winning staff is well known in the cook stove sector, and "requests for proposals" on new and innovative life-saving stoves from around the globe are creating a critical need for greater capacity.

This project focuses on a need to increase BDL's exposure to the Greater Seattle Area and beyond in the world of science, technology, health, safety, clean air, deforestation, the environment, women and children, women's economics opportunities, and childhood education. Basically, we would like to align our fundraising efforts with a communications/public relations plan.

At this stage, BDL is at the capacity-building stage after steadily increasing more than 10 years of success. The need for growth is strong. The staff consists of talented high achieving interns, and tenured engineers, field staff, and volunteers. The Board consists of very dedicated and successful professionals in their field of experience, including the board president, an acclaimed and named Mechanical Engineering professorship at the University of Washington, the Richard and Victoria Harrington Professor in Engineering Innovation in Health.

We have on staff a full-time development professional, and a part-time communications and development professional ready to implement and complete any and all public relations and communications efforts.
