Project need

Family Services of Westchester (FSW) is seeking a skilled volunteer team to redesign its website so that it has the capacity to meet the needs of a social service agency with 50 programs. (To take a look at the FSW website, please go to http://www.fsw.org/ as the website linked to FSW's Taproot account is actually the Big Brothers Big Sisters of FSW website.)

The most important issue for the FSW website is that it needs to be highly accessible in order to meet the needs of people seeking assistance at times of duress and frequently in times of crisis. For instance, the website is frequently visited by people in need of mental health services or social workers possibly interested in enrolling a child in need of a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters. Another example is my Second Home when people are seeking Adult Day Care for their loved ones, often to obtain needed respite for themselves and get care for a spouse or parent.

Target Skills: (1) Graphic design - web, (2) User interface design and (3) Web development
FSW is looking to Taproot volunteers for web design specialists who will be able to lead us in an audit and SWOT analysis of the current FSW website, which was built on the WordPress platform, to analyze what is working and what is not working as well. The current website platform is not user friendly and presents difficulty to re-vamp and build the easy flow and accessible navigation needed for our programs.
We are also seeking to create a more compelling website: At present the website generates no revenue - FSW needs a call to action to bring in donations. Currently that function is served by Facebook.

FSW is dedicated to providing a broad range of social and mental health services to support and strengthen Westchester County’s children, individuals and families throughout every stage of their lives. FSW is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded by a single social worker in 1954. Today FSW offers a broad range of innovative programs custom designed to meet particular needs of children, teens, adults, and the elderly, among them social support for the elderly; assistance to veterans; and help for immigrants; afterschool and year-round mentoring programs for children and teens; adoption and foster care for children and youths; Head Start and Pre-K programs; educational and support services for people living with HIV/AIDS, along with seven mental health clinic locations.
As you can see, we are seeking highly skilled professionals to volunteer for this project and help FSW design one website to meet a wide range of uses that are all vital to the success of this social service. The website is integral to: 1) making available FSW's 50 social service programs to prospective clients and beneficiaries; 2) providing critical information to our donors and foundations that hopefully provide necessary income through grants and donations; and 3) marketing our programs to prospective volunteers, organizations and corporate partners so they may determine whether FSW would meet their needs and interests.

FSW is working to develop a re-branding plan spearheaded by the Development Department and the Development Committee of the Board of Directors. There are two dedicated professionals who will take on the work of maintaining and updating the website and will be very interested in pursuing the professional skills to develop their website management skills. FSW has selected two social service agency websites to draw from in terms of overall flow (one in Chicago and the other in nearby White Plains).
